Why and how T.J. Otzelberger is bringing Diante Garrett back to his alma mater as an assistant coach

AMES – It’s the beginning of Diante Garrett’s sophomore year at Vincent High School in Milwaukee, Wisc., and Iowa State assistant coach T.J. Otzelberger is beginning to recruit the 6-foot-4, 170-pound point guard.

Garrett later signed with Iowa State in the 2007 recruiting class and proceeded to have a decorated college career with the Cyclones from 200-7-11. He started 99 of 128 career games and averaged 10.7 career points with close to five assists per game for the Cyclones. As a senior in 2010-11, he was a second-team All-Big 12 selection after posting an impressive 17.3 ppg and 6.1 assists.

For the dozen years after his Cyclone career, Garrett played professionally, including stints with the Phoenix Suns and Utah Jazz before an extensive professional career playing internationally…
