First National Bank tellers, about 1900
When the First National Bank of Fremont was started by Sardis Birchard about 1861, it was only the fifth national bank in the United States. Our federal paper currency began with the national banking system that funded the Union armies during the Civil War. This rare ornate interior view taken about 1900 shows tellers in the bank that stood on the southwest corner of Front Street and Croghan Street from the 1860s to the 1960s.
