Unpopular coal plant subsidies could disappear in new energy debate

COLUMBUS — Gov. Mike DeWine says he would not be unhappy if consumer subsidies for two aging coal-fired plants in southern Ohio and Indiana went away as part of a larger energy policy debate to come.

“That was not something that was part of [House Bill 6] that I thought was necessary, but it was something that the legislature put in there,” the Republican governor said Wednesday. “I am fine certainly if that is taken out.”

As the 136th General Assembly dawns, legislative leaders are talking about reopening the larger debate on electricity generation to ensure the availability of power as the state lures electricity-gobbling industries like data centers and computer chip and car battery manufacturing plants. The governor said his office is involved in these early discussions…
