After arrests of Palm Beach Central admins, schools may change policy on reporting abuse

After five Palm Beach Central High employees were arrested in 2023 and charged with failing to report allegations of sexual assault between two students, Palm Beach County’s school board plans to change its policies to require school employees to report teen dating violence, in addition to child abuse and neglect, to the state abuse hotline.

That change may resolve blind spots in the state-mandated training for school employees, which never mentions sexual assault between two minors as a topic of concern. The Palm Beach Post reviewed the training created by Florida’s Department of Children and Families and found no mentions of teen dating violence.

Charges were ultimately dropped against all five Palm Beach Central employees: former principal Darren Edgecomb, assistant principals Daniel Snider and Nareyda Cayado de Garcia, guidance counselor Priscilla Carter and chorus teacher Scott Houchins…
