Supplemental EMS service starts working with new year

POUGHKEEPSIE – Dutchess County’s temporary “supplemental ambulance service” plan to alleviate the stress on EMS ambulance services, both volunteer and professional, that began on January 1, 2025, is off to a successful start, according to Dutchess County Executive Sue Serino. The supplemental ambulance coverage is part of the $2 million investment proposed by Serino and included in the 2025 budget that was approved by the county legislature in December.

Through a contract with the county, Empress Ambulance provides supplemental services under the direction of the County 911 Communications Center. The status of the Ambulnz contract has not been disclosed other than the county saying it is in contract discussions with Ambulnz to serve as the secondary provider, providing ambulance services during peak demand times, as well as on-call ambulance service for Dutchess County Government-hosted events to ensure safety and timely response for attendees.

“By contracting for countywide ambulance units, we are addressing gaps in EMS coverage, improving response times, and ensuring neighbors have access to timely, high-quality emergency care,” Serino said. Whether it’s a medical emergency in a rural area or a large-scale event requiring immediate major response capabilities, these resources will assist in ensuring that help will arrive when it’s needed most. This initiative is a direct result of listening to our communities and taking action to meet their needs.”…
