Iconic Springfield bookstore cat Googey, a former Captain Springfield, has died

Springfield has lost a figure who was small in stature but large in impact.

Googey, the orange cat who lived at a downtown bookstore and was elected Captain Springfield in 2023, died on Thursday evening, according to a post on the Bookmarx Facebook page. A memorial will take place on Jan. 19 at the bookstore, 325 E. Walnut St.

According to the post, Googey died peacefully at his home with the assistance of Peaceful Crossings, a pet euthanasia service, and surrounded by his human family and his fellow bookstore cat, Squash. He found his home at Bookmarx about a decade ago, as a kitten, when a shelter worker brought him to a book club meeting…
