Funds needed to support Commerce City officer seriously injured in DUI crash

DENVER ( KDVR ) — A Commerce City police officer and father of two is still recovering from traumatic injuries he incurred from a suspected DUI crash on Dec. 31, and several groups are stepping up to ensure he gets the support he needs.

Commerce City Patrol Officer Aaron Cortez was investigating a crash on Interstate 270 west of Vasquez Boulevard just after midnight on Dec. 31 when a suspected drunk driver crashed into the back of Cortez’s patrol vehicle. Cortez had only been with the agency for two years before the crash.

Cortez survived but was taken to a local hospital with a severe concussion, in addition to hip, back and neck injuries. He told FOX31’s Greg Nieto that he was investigated a suspected DUI single-vehicle crash when the second suspected DUI driver crashed into the scene.

“Last thing I saw was headlights and someone had crashed into the back of my patrol vehicle,” Cortez said. “Only God knows where we’d be if the seat belt wasn’t on.”…
