South Carolina Roads Face Black Ice Risks This Morning: Drivers Urged to Use Caution

Spartanburg, SC – Temperatures below freezing this morning are creating hazardous driving conditions across South Carolina. Black ice and slick roads are widespread, especially on bridges and shaded areas.

According to the National Weather Service (NWS), icy patches could persist until midday as temperatures slowly climb above freezing. Drivers in the Upstate area and northern counties should reduce speeds, increase following distances, and avoid sudden braking. Dangerous spots include sections of I-85 and U.S. Highway 176 near Spartanburg, where freezing conditions are likely to linger.

Weather conditions are expected to improve by this afternoon, with clearing skies and a high near 38 degrees. Tonight, temperatures will drop sharply to 18 degrees, increasing the likelihood of refreezing on untreated surfaces. Sunday will bring sunny skies with light winds and a high of 40, followed by another cold night near 22 degrees.
