Maryland wrestling, an outlier in the Alaskan bobsledding conference, pulls off a stunner

For the University of Maryland wrestling program, life in the Big Ten is demoralizing. It’s a geographical and cultural outlier in a group of mostly Midwestern schools with exponentially larger wrestling culture and support. It’s like a California school competing in the Alaskan bobsledding conference.

Since joining the Big Ten in 2014, Maryland’s wrestling recorded a 2-76 conference record before last season. Yes, two and seventy-four.
