On my drive home, one route requires a strange and steep hill called the Seasonal Limited Use Highway. It used to be closed from first snowfall to last, but now it is open year-round. So, I blithely took that route home in December.
These snowy days in the hills of Madison County are not for the faint of heart. It was late, and the ice under the snow had become treacherous. I have learned to slow down on these kinds of nights, so when I hit the crest of the hill and started my descent, I was only going 10 miles an hour. Thank you, God. The car began to slide, and I hit the brakes hard – which locked them up and made them dysfunctional. Picking up speed without brakes sent adrenaline power to my brain. Think, plan, act, it screamed. I had less than a minute before I would slam into the trees at the bottom of the hill. Pumping the brakes didn’t work…
