“Cold comfort,” according to the Oxford Languages internet site, means poor or inadequate consolation.

But actual cold, according to me, is a thrilling thing: blue sky like last Thursday’s, temps in single digits or lower, the regulars at breakfast comparing home and vehicle, in-town and country thermometer readings.

That brought out thoughts of deep cold, the coldest cold, when snow squeaks when you walk on it, flakes form in clear air as the last bit of moisture shakes frozen from it, soft outerwear becomes stiff and rattily…
