The road not taken: Melbourne Civic Theatre takes a joyride in ‘Becky’s New Car’

What if you had the chance to jump start your life? That’s the question posed by “Becky’s New Car,” the Steven Dietz comedy revving its engines at Melbourne Civic Theatre. The play opens Friday, Jan. 17 for a run through Feb. 23.

At the heart of “Becky’s New Car” is Becky Foster, a wife, mother and middle-management employee, caught in the routine grind of mundane office work and family obligations. She’s a woman you might pass on the street without a second glance, or the coworker who politely makes the coffee run.

When a wealthy widower stumbles onto her car dealership lot one day, Becky finds herself with the chance to live a life beyond her staid routine. The show’s central tension is this: Will she take this detour, or will she remain on the familiar road she’s navigated for years?…
