OTTAWA COUNTY, Ohio — The Ottawa National Wildlife Refuge said the current H5N1 strain of bird flu was detected in wild birds in Ottawa County in the latter half of 2024.
ONWR said it has received reports of impaired birds at the refuge over the past week and is monitoring the situation. The refuge is asking that if you come across a dead or sick bird during a visit, do not approach or touch it.
ONWR said to report the sighting to the refuge staff. Visitors are also asked to contact biologist Ron Huffman at 419-707-9113 by sending a text with the type of bird, location, date and time of sighting, and a detailed description of the bird’s condition and behavior.
