SWLA firefighters react to Calif. wildfires

LAKE CHARLES, La. (KPLC) – Many local firefighters know what the firefighters in Southern California are going through. In 2023, some residents in Southwest Louisiana experienced something they never thought they’d experience, wildfires.

Fire crews worked endlessly to contain the fires, but some landowners and homeowners faced devastating impacts.

“In 2023, we were in extreme drought conditions,” Todd Parker, Fire Chief of Calcasieu Parish Ward Six Fire District 1, said. “Our weather conditions at that time had some higher winds during the daytime, low humidity, and high heat, which is conducive for extreme blow-ups in fire. In California, they face that a lot more than we do in Southwest Louisiana.”…
