Peoria adopts legislative goals including SAFE-T Act changes, measures to avoid New Orleans truck ramming repeat

PEORIA (25News Now) – Peoria City Council members are backing a comprehensive wish list for state government, including changes to the controversial SAFE-T Act and funding to protect the city from an attack similar to the deadly truck ramming in New Orleans early on New Year’s Day.

Mayor Rita Ali said council members don’t have to agree on all the proposals contained in the legislative agenda to be presented Wednesday morning to state lawmakers representing the Peoria area.

However, Ali’s two opponents in the upcoming mayoral election made it clear they want lawmakers to amend the SAFE-T Act, which ended the cash bail system in Illinois and empowered judges to decide whether criminal defendants should be jailed or released before their trials…
