Tennessee officials warn of crowds at DMV facilities as REAL ID deadline looms

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WKRN) — As the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) finalizes the way it will phase in Real IDs , the Tennessee Department of Safety & Homeland Security has urged residents not to wait until the May 7 deadline to get theirs.

The measure has been a long time in the making. The Real ID Act was passed in 2005 as a way to better protect the U.S. following the 9/11 terror attacks. Although the implementation date has been pushed back several times, the May 7, 2025 deadline remains final.

The Tennessee Department of Safety & Homeland Security expects DMV offices to get more crowded closer to the deadline. They have encouraged residents to get their REAL IDs sooner rather than later…
