An ABC 17 Stormtrack Weather Alert Day has been issued from Sunday morning through mid-afternoon Tuesday as dangerously cold temperatures are expected to set in by the end of the weekend.
A cold front slides through the region Friday night into Saturday, bringing rain to parts of Mid-Missouri before daybreak Saturday. Temperatures fall off on Saturday, with highs only making the upper 20s to around 30 as arctic air spills in from the north.
This pattern stays locked in through early next week, with morning lows falling into the single digits and highs in the mid-upper teens through Tuesday. As upper winds begin to flatten out, we’ll see some relief by Wednesday as temperatures get closer to our seasonal average in the mid-upper 30s.
Wind chills are expected to dip below zero starting Sunday morning, and continue to be around -5 to -10 through Tuesday morning. Limit your exposure and/or have plenty of layers if you have to be outdoors for long periods of time.
Extended exposure can cause frostbite at specific thresholds. While this won’t be the coldest air Mid-Missouri has ever seen, it’s important to keep extremities covered and limit your pet’s time outdoors as well.
Protect your pipes from cracking or bursting overnight by opening cabinet doors and letting faucets drip. Heat your home to no lower than 55 degrees, even when you’re not at home…
