D.C. Metropolitan Police Seize 34 Illegal Firearms in One Week Amid Crackdown on Street Violence

The Metropolitan Police Department of Washington D.C. has been diligently cracking down on the scourge of illegal firearms on the city’s streets. Between January 6 and January 13, the MPD reported the recovery of 34 firearms in various neighborhoods across the District. The MPD’s strategy involves intelligence-based policing to identify and apprehend armed individuals who threaten the community.

While this tally is not exhaustive of all gun seizures in the area, the snapshot given by the MPD indicates a range of handguns, assault rifles, and even homemade “Ghost Guns” have been taken into custody. Firearms were seized from the 1100 block of Third Street, Southwest, to the 5800 block of Dix Street, Northeast. A notable inclusion in the week’s haul was a .223 caliber assault rifle alongside a Glock 23 .40 caliber handgun in the 2200 block of Savannah Terrace, Southeast, as documented by the MPD’s official release.

The recoveries often led to arrests, shedding light on the intertwining of gun possession with other criminal activities. Derrick Freeman, a 45-year-old resident of Southeast D.C., was arrested with a Taurus G2C 9mm caliber handgun and charged with multiple firearm and drug offenses. Furthermore, a 13-year-old male juvenile was apprehended with a “Ghost Gun” in a gun-free zone, drawing attention to the worrying trend of youth involvement in gun crimes…
