CHICAGO (WMBD) — Illinois residents looking to buy a used car from out-of-state are encouraged to take extra precautions after an uptick in a recent scam involving fraudulent vehicle purchases.
According to Illinois Secretary of State Alexi Giannoulias, his office has found an increasing number of fraudulent sales from out-of-state businesses licensed as wholesale dealers that falsify the mileage on a used vehicle’s title and odometer to defraud the buyer.
Giannoulias said his office learned of one recent example that involved a business that rolled the odometer back to say the vehicle had 80,000 miles when it had more than 200,000. The vehicle also had major mechanical problems that were not disclosed…
