Long-awaited child care center will open on the Peninsula in March

NEWPORT NEWS — A long-awaited educational facility that will give families more affordable child care options on the Peninsula will be ready to welcome children by early March.

Area officials on Thursday celebrated the completion of the roughly 32,000-square-foot Newport News Early Childhood Development Center — which is owned by the Newport News government and will be operated by Peake Childhood Center, a Peninsula-based nonprofit. Peake plans to provide academic, emotional and social education to roughly 200 children between the ages of 6 months to 5 years.

Peake Executive Director Jennifer Parish said the nonprofit currently serves 125 students at its Hampton site but has a “400-children-long wait list.” The Newport News location, in the Southeast Community, will more than double its capacity…
