Plan For Back Of The Yards Gunshot Detection Pilot Shot Down By Mayor’s Office

BACK OF THE YARDS — Mayor Brandon Johnson’s administration dashed a Southwest Side alderman’s call to run a gunshot-detection technology pilot program in his ward.

On Monday, Ald. Raymond Lopez (15th) presented a six-month pilot program for a gunshot detection technology that would replace ShotSpotter, starting with his Southwest Side ward.

But Deputy Mayor for Community Safety Garien Gatewood said Wednesday that Lopez doesn’t have the authority to run a pilot in his ward.

The city’s efforts to find a technology that replaces ShotSpotter are underway, involving several city departments, Gatewood said. Any pilot programs will have gone through the city’s request for information issued last year…
