MLK Oratory competition crowns repeat winner at 29th annual event

HOUSTON — The annual MLK Oratory competition crowned a winner Friday. And for the first time, the winner is a repeat. Montoia Murray, 10, took home first place again. She beat out 150 other HISD students to make it to the finals.

Speaking to the students, you get a sense of how important this competition is not just to the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. but also how important it is to them. They say the weeks of practice were hard but dedication pushed them forward.

Ten of Houston’s finest fourth and fifth graders took center stage at Antioch Missionary Baptist Church to compete in the 29th MLK Oratory Competition finals. And Murray may look familiar because she’s been here before…
