Autopsy shows cause of death for ex-Bridgeport fire official found dead day of sex assault sentencing

BRIDGEPORT — A former assistant city fire chief who was convicted in November of sexually assaulting a woman in his home in 2022 died by suicide, according to the Connecticut Office of the Chief Medical Examiner.

Bridgeport police officers found Harold Clarke Sr. dead Friday after a judicial marshal told them he hadn’t appeared at his scheduled sentencing that morning. Clarke, a 34-year veteran of the Bridgeport Fire Department, faced up to 20 years behind bars on two counts of second-degree sexual assault.
