Winter weather and arctic cold air for the weekend

Good Saturday morning, everyone!

We are tracking a long stretch of below freezing temperatures this weekend into the start of the next workweek. We are waking up to a very cold start in the teens and 20s. A shortwave trough will move in to the area bringing the winter weather. The snow showers will enter the area in the morning, starting in northeast New Mexico and the northwest combined Panhandles. This system will then head south along the NM/TX Stateline. The snow showers will move into the central Panhandle on Saturday evening. Totals of around an inch are anticipated for most of the central Panhandles. Light dusting for the eastern counties. There is a Winter Storm Warning for Union County in effect until 11 p.m. MST tonight. Snow totals are expected between 3-6 inches in northeast New Mexico. There is also a Winter Weather Advisory in effect for the northwest Panhandles until midnight CST. This area is expected between 1-3 inches. Please be careful, if traveling. Slick roads will be a concern, especially the farther northwest you go. The activity will be over with late tonight. Temps will continue to be below freezing during the long weekend. Make sure to keep in mind your pets, plants, pipes and people. Stay safe and warm this weekend!
