Northeast Braces for Major Winter Storm

Additional Coverage:

A major winter storm is set to hit the US this weekend, bringing snow and ice to millions of people.

Weather alerts are in effect for 15 states from Tennessee to Maine, including cities like Philadelphia, Boston, and Albany. A less severe winter weather advisory is also in place for major cities like Baltimore, New York, and Washington, D.C.

In addition to the snowstorm, an arctic blast is spreading across the country, bringing dangerously cold temperatures. Wind chills will drop below zero in many cities, including Chicago, Minneapolis, and Pittsburgh.

The cold weather is expected to reach the Gulf Coast on Tuesday, with wind chills falling below 20 degrees as far south as Houston.

Snow-covered roads and poor visibility are likely during the storm, especially Sunday evening. Travel could be difficult in the Northeast, and slick spots may remain on roads into Monday morning.

Snowfall totals are expected to vary, with some areas receiving up to a foot of snow. New York City is expected to get 3 to 6 inches, while Philadelphia is expecting 4 to 6 inches.

After the storm passes, cold weather is forecast to linger in the affected areas for much of the upcoming week.
