Rare Winter Storm Watch issued for the Big Bend and South Georgia

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WCTV) – The National Weather Service (NWS) office in Tallahassee has issued a very rare Winter Storm Watch for all of the Big Bend and South Georgia.

The watch goes into effect Tuesday afternoon and will run through Wednesday morning. But the watch could be upgraded to a warning as we get closer to Tuesday.

Each NWS office has different criteria that need to be met to issue a winter-related watch or warning. For instance, in Tallahassee, the criteria for a Winter Storm Watch is “issued when significant ice accumulation of 1/4 inch or more is possible, OR snowfall of 1 inch or more is possible.” A watch goes into effect 12-48 hours ahead of a storm. However, a warning is “issued when significant ice accumulation of 1/4 inch or more is likely in combination with other precipitation types, OR snowfall of 1 inch or more is likely.” The warning would go into effect 6-24 hours ahead of a storm…
