Following lead of most other states, MHSA adopts NIL policy at annual meeting

BILLINGS — Members of the Montana High School Association approved an amended bylaw during Monday’s annual meeting allowing Montana student-athletes to profit from their Name, Image and Likeness (NIL) for the first time.

The action, presented by the MHSA executive board, reached the required two-thirds of attending member schools’ approval to pass at the meeting inside the Billings Hotel and Convention Center. The rule now awaits approval from the 2025 Montana Legislative.

MHSA executive director Brian Michelotti told The Billings Gazette and 406 MT Sports that Montana’s high school NIL bylaw features numerous policies that have been implemented in other states.
