James Beard-recognized Bay Area dim sum restaurant relocating to mall

Koi Palace, the special occasion dim sum restaurant known for its colorful soup dumplings, is relocating its flagship location in Daly City. After nearly 30 years, the popular eatery is moving to a new location at Daly City mall Serramonte Center in December, next to the upcoming Korean food complex Jagalchi (which is set to open in February), according to Palo Alto Online .

Willy Ng, co-owner of the James Beard award-nominated restaurant, told Palo Alto Online that they decided to move for the additional space. The current Daly City strip mall location at 365 Gellert Blvd. has 400 seats; the new digs at 3 Serramonte Center are roughly double the size, with a seating capacity of 760 to 800. Instead, the original location plans to close the same day that the new restaurant opens, as reported by Palo Alto Online. The decor will be “more high end, modern…(and) classy” Ng told the publication, but there will still be a koi pond. SFGATE could not reach Ng for comment before publication.

Ng and his brother Ronny Ng opened the Daly City Koi Palace in 1996, serving not only soup dumplings but also seafood, classic Cantonese dishes such as char siu, and other barbecued and wok-fried dishes. Eventually, they expanded Koi Palace with full sit-down locations in Milpitas, Dublin and Cupertino, plus express and ghost kitchen locations. The Ng family also owns San Francisco’s Palette Tea House and Dragon Beaux. Koi Palace has been nominated for a James Beard Award multiple times. As recently as last year, it was named a semifinalist for the foundation’s Outstanding Restaurant award…
