The Clarke County School District announced in an email on Tuesday that a public hearing on whether to opt out of the homestead exemption outlined in House Bill 581 will be rescheduled due to inclement weather. A new time and date have not been announced at time of publication.
The hearing, originally scheduled for 6 p.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 21, would have been the second of three public hearings regarding HB 581.
HB 581, passed in the November 2024 general election, would limit annual increases in property taxes on homeowners’ primary residences. CCSD is in the process of deciding whether to opt out of the homestead exemption due to the negative impact the loss of revenue could have on funding schools. …
