South Carolina Weather Alert: Black Ice x Frozen Ponds Pose Dangers in Greenville Area

Greenville, SC – Residents in Upstate South Carolina are urged to exercise caution as cold temperatures keep black ice and frozen ponds a persistent hazard across the region. The National Weather Service (NWS) Greenville-Spartanburg issued reminders about the risks posed by icy roads and unstable frozen water.

According to the NWS, shaded areas where snow has yet to melt remain particularly dangerous, as black ice can form on roads, bridges, and overpasses. Drivers are advised to reduce speed and avoid sudden braking in areas that appear wet but are likely covered in ice. “If the road looks wet and temperatures are below freezing, you’re probably driving on ice,” the advisory warns.

In addition to road hazards, frozen ponds, lakes, and streams in the Piedmont region should not be considered safe for walking or recreation. The NWS cautions that these ice-covered surfaces cannot reliably support the weight of people or pets and can break without warning, leading to life-threatening situations.
