This Animal Is Likely Nesting in Your Colorado Neighborhood Now

This morning I heard a sound that I have never heard in my Colorado backyard. For reference, I live in North Fort Collins. I really live in between Fort Collins and Wellington. I’ve lived in this house for two years. For the first time, around 3:30 a.m., I heard an owl.

I was pumped.

Later in the day, my girlfriend sent me a picture of a new nest in a neighbor’s tree. She managed to identify that the owl was a Great Horned Owl. These owls are huge and have a wingspan of five feet. This owl is by far the largest in Colorado. They also happen to be the most common.
