Picking up illegal signs in Augusta would be helped by helping Marshal’s budget

AUGUSTA, Ga. (WJBF) – The city of Augusta didn’t put up all the illegal signs in the right of ways, but taking them down is something city leaders want to get done. “Signage has always been a problem, a habitual problem. You know in the past, the Marshal’s Department has done a lot of pickups,” said Mayor Pro-Tem Wayne Guilfoyle. And while there is a tremendous number of illegal signs to pick up, the Marshal’s Office is having a difficult time finding the manpower. The office is down 23 employees, so it’s concentrating on mandated services.

“Dealing with courts, doing evictions and doing security of the buildings – so picking up signs and doing the sign enforcement has to has to take the background right now,” said Richmond County Marshal Ramone Lamkin.

The Marshal told commissioners he needs a $320,000 budget increase to boost salaries in order to fill the vacancies…
