Almost 2 years of construction ahead to widen I-59 in Trussville

TRUSSVILLE, Ala. — If you travel Interstate 59 through the Trussville area, you’ve probably noticed there is some roadwork happening there. Crews are adding two lanes to the interstate, one heading north, the other heading south.

The work will be happening through about a four-mile stretch over the next almost two years.

Right now, there are orange construction barrels lining the interstate, as well as heavy equipment removing trees and moving dirt. This is just over a $70 million project, during this first phase most of the work will be happening in the median, that’s where the two new lanes will be built. ALDOT officials say any lane closures during this phase will happen overnight, and there should always be at least one lane open. The folks we spoke with who drive this route regularly said the extra lanes are much needed…
