How South Georgia communities plan to prepare for impacts of Tropical Storm Helene

ALBANY, Ga. (WALB) – According to the National Weather Service (NWS), Tropical Storm Helene is expected to hit South Georgia on Thursday evening into Friday morning.

Here is how several South Georgia communities plan to prepare for the upcoming storm:

Albany

  • Sweep the streets, especially in areas of localized flooding
  • Cleaning and checking catch basins in those areas
  • Dropping water levels in ponds that do not have outfalls

Bainbridge

  • Sandbags are available for pick up at the city of Bainbridge’s Public Works Office, located at 1503 Pierce Street, and the Public Safety Office on Louise Street.

Lowndes County

The Lowndes County Emergency Management Agency announced sand pickup starting at 4 p.m. at the following locations:

  • The Fire Station on Shiloh Road, Station 6: 6031 Shiloh Road, Hahira, Georgia
  • The Fire Station on Upper New Bethel Road, Station 6: 6187 Upper New Bethel Road, Valdosta, Georgia
  • The Fire Station on Old Quitman Hwy: 3979 Old Quitman Highway Valdosta, GA
  • The old Fire Station location in Clyattville: 5000 Cedar Drive Valdosta, GA

There is a limit of 10 bags per household and residents are asked to bring their own shovels to fill the bags.

Thomas County

Thomas County Public Works is providing free sandbags to residents. Sandbags are available at eight locations, with a limit of 10 per household. WALB’s Lenah Allen will have more information in our later newscasts.

Valdosta

The city of Valdosta announced sand pickup at the following locations:

  • 5 Points
  • Intersection of Lee Street and Savannah Avenue
  • City Lot on 1025 W Hill Avenue
