$300K settlement reached by city with former Anchorage police officer in racial discrimination suit

ANCHORAGE, Alaska (KTUU) – The Municipality of Anchorage has agreed to pay former police Lt. Jared Tuia $300,000 to settle his 2019 racial discrimination lawsuit against the Anchorage Police Department.

According to a complaint, Tuia — who is Samoan — was denied a promotion to Captain on three separate occasions in 2015, 2017 and 2018, saying lieutenants with “lesser time in grade and lesser qualifications” were promoted despite Tuia achieving the rank of lieutenant, recognition for performing excellent service throughout various assignments, and obtaining a Masters Degree in criminology and a diploma from the Police Staff and Command School at Northwestern University.

When Tuia was passed up for a promotion for a third time, he asked for a debriefing — which was not provided, according to the complaint…
