The issue of missing and murdered Indigenous persons in Alaska remains a significant concern. In 2023, there were 155 reported cases, with 143 people missing and 12 murdered. This situation highlights a major safety and justice issue for Indigenous communities. Alaska Natives, especially women, face disproportionately high rates of violence. They are involved in 250 percent more domestic violence cases than their representation in the population and make up 47 percent of rape victims in the state, despite being only 19 percent of the population.

A 2013 report by the Indian Law and Order Commission points to stark disparities in crime rates against Alaska Natives, calling for immediate action. The high rates of domestic violence, sexual assault, and other violent crimes require a strong response from both the community and the state.
