PALMER, Alaska (KTUU) -A new proposed bill pushed forward by a lawmaker this session would allow any student access to free breakfast and lunch in public schools.
House Bill 12, sponsored by Fairbanks Representative Maxine Dibert, is asking that the Department of Education and Early Development (DEED) maximize the federal funding and then dip into state funding, to fund the meals.
“Funding for this bill will maximize federal dollars and any potential state funds would come from outside the BSA,” Rep. Dibert shared in a statement. “If we want to make sure our education system is effective, we need to start by improving student health and well-being and by reducing hunger. If we are able to do this, it is clear that it will help us take great strides towards improving academic performance.”…
