Tecumseh Woman Charged in Fatal DUI Crash That Killed Clinton Man, Injured Another

A Tecumseh woman is facing charges in a fatal drunk driving crash that occurred in Lenawee County in August. Holly Schmidt, 38, was charged with one count each of operating while intoxicated causing death, and causing serious injury after a collision killed a 72-year-old man and left a 75-year-old woman severely injured. The Detroit News reports that Schmidt was arraigned on Thursday.

According to CBS News Detroit, the crash took place on Tecumseh Clinton Highway, where Schmidt’s Jeep Wrangler reportedly collided with a GMC Terrain that was traveling in the opposite direction. The crash occurred shortly after 9:30 p.m. on August 14. The arraignment followed months of investigation by multiple law enforcement agencies including the Michigan State Police’s Traffic Crash Reconstruction Unit. Schmidt’s bond has been set at $75,000 following her arrest Wednesday.

Michigan State Police have confirmed that alcohol was a suspected factor in the crash. The deceased man and the injured passenger, both residents of Clinton, Michigan, were traveling in the struck GMC Terrain. The 75-year-old woman was airlifted to the University of Michigan Hospital in Ann Arbor in critical condition, as per The Detroit News.
