Jacksonville, AL — On November 1, cities across the United States will join together to honor those who exemplify selflessness and dedication on Extra Mile Day. Over 500 mayors from all 50 states, including Jacksonville’s own Mayor Johnny L. Smith, will issue proclamations recognizing the significant contributions made by volunteers who “go the extra mile” in their communities.
Extra Mile Day, spearheaded by the nonprofit organization Extra Mile America, aims to emphasize the profound impact volunteerism has on society. Established in 2009 with only 23 cities participating, the movement has grown significantly, with more than 500 mayors expected to take part in the 2024 declaration. This initiative seeks to inspire community members to reflect on their own capacity to make a difference and to acknowledge those who dedicate their time and energy for the betterment of others.
“Going the extra mile and making a difference happens in a thousand different ways,” said Shawn Anderson, motivational author and founder of the Extra Mile Day movement. Anderson highlighted the various forms of volunteerism, noting, “It’s the volunteer who makes time to read to a group of seniors at the Senior’s center; it’s the parent who bakes cookies to raise money for the PTA; it’s the group who gives time on weekends to pick up litter; it’s the volunteer helping abandoned pets find loving homes. It’s these people—and hundreds of others—who unselfishly add value to our communities.”…
