Severe storms possible late Sunday

(WOWK) — An overall warmup starts slowly Wednesday and Thursday before the region hits the 70s for afternoon highs. The area stays warm in the 70s until a cold front brings strong storms to the area at the end of the weekend.

The area is included in a 15% risk for severe storms for Sunday March 30 as listed by the Storm Prediction Center.

The risk area is very large and the types of storms that could be seen will vary as the storms start well to the west and evolve into different modes as they encounter different conditions in our area. The current thought is that strong winds are the top item to watch out for in the WOWK-TV viewing area. The tornado risk is on the table but should be low. The storms will not have the peak heating of the day as they move in.

Timing is highly different from model to model for a potential line of strong storms. The weather model known as the European Model has the strongest storms entering the area around sunset Sunday.

The American GFS model holds the strong storms off until as late as Monday morning. That would likely greatly reduce the risk of severe limits being realized.

Despite differences in timing, both of the premiere longer range weather models indicate the biggest chunk of rain falls in the region with more than an inch of rain Sunday through Monday mainly on the west side of the viewing area.
