U.S. Department of Education giving a “Fresh Start” to borrowers with defaulted federal student loans

Fresh Start started during the pandemic and ends on Sept. 30, 2024. It gives borrowers who are in default on their student loans a chance to get out of default and start making regular payments without penalty.

“The Fresh Start program is a temporary, one-time initiative from the U.S. Department of Education that offers special benefits for borrowers that have their loans in default,” said Rich Williams, deputy assistant secretary for the U.S. Department of Education.
