This past fall has seen another good run of steelhead on the Feather River. Without a salmon season again this year, many anglers focused on the steelhead run through the fall. To ensure a staging area for salmon and steelhead without fishing pressure, the river from the Hwy 70 bridge up to the Table Mountain Bicycle Bridge, near the hatchery, is closed from mid July through December. For decades this stretch of river reopens to fishing on the first day of the year. Non anglers might not understand the allure of getting out before dawn to fish in the rain or fog at the coldest time of year. But annually many anglers do not sleep in, the fishing can be that good.
