HARTFORD, CONN. (WJAR) — In an age of online scammers who appear to be raising funds in the name of good causes the Salvation Army is reminding people who want to help wildfire victims in California to beware.
According to Michael Baldelli of the Southern New England Division of the worldwide organization, the best way to help is by donating directly to organizations on the ground in the disaster area.
Baldelli points out that while people in Rhode Island and Connecticut have offered items ranging from blankets to bottled water, the cost of shipping them to the west coast makes accepting them for an emergency thousands of miles away prohibitive.
