Texas’ Colin Simmons wins Shaun Alexander Freshman of the Year Award over Ohio State’s Jeremiah Smith

Many people across college football consider Jeremiah Smith to be the freshman in the country. However, the Ohio State wide receiver did not take home top honors in his class.

On Thursday, it was announced that Texas defensive end Colin Simmons was the 2024 winner of the Shaun Alexander Freshman of the Year Award, awarded annually to the top first-year player in college football by the Maxwell Football Club. Former NFL Most Valuable Player Shaun Alexander called Simmons on Christmas day to let the Longhorns budding star know of his achievement.

“We are excited to welcome (Colin) as our 7th Shaun Alexander Freshman Player of the Year Award winner,” Alexander said in the press release announcing the winner. “This was the closest race in the award’s history, and we know that we have picked a great winner. Colin is a perfect representative for the Shaun Alexander FPOY award – great talent, great character, great ambassador to the University of Texas, and we believe he is a legend, a future superstar in the NFL.”…
