California authorities successfully used an infrared-equipped drone to locate a missing 78-year-old man on Christmas Eve. The man, who suffers from early-onset dementia, went missing while retrieving his mail, prompting an urgent search effort by the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department’s Malibu Search and Rescue (SAR) Team.
Heat-seeking drone leads rescuers to critical discovery
Malibu SAR deployed multiple drones, including one equipped with cutting-edge infrared heat-seeking technology, to assist in the search. According to a statement from the Sheriff’s Office, the advanced drone detected “a significant heat signature over the side of the roadway in thick brush.”
