California has declared a state of emergency over growing concerns from the spread of the H5N1 bird flu virus. Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Los Angeles suggests taking precautions to protect pets.
According to reports, about 60 people nationwide have contracted the virus, most likely due to their association with the poultry or dairy industries. However, in California, 33 people contracted the virus from ingesting infected dairy. Two cats also became ill after ingesting raw milk from an infected cow.
