Families upset as local cemetery removes personal belongings from gravesites

BATTLE CREEK, Mich. — There’s controversy surrounding Memorial Park Cemetery in Battle Creek over items that are not permitted at gravesites.

Residents are saddened that they can’t keep their personal belongings at their loved one’s headstone.

Andrea Botimer lost her her 7-week-old son in 2018, telling News Channel 3 it was one of the most painful chapters of her life.

“It’s something that nobody should have to go through,” Botimer said. “Even though it’s been six years it’s still really hard.”

Since 2018, Botimer has had a pot of flowers next to Lane’s, her son’s, headstone with an angel, flag and sentimental sign.

Recently, when Botimer went back to visit Lane, the personal belongings were all removed by cemetery management.
