If you’ve spent any time on Michigan highways like US-131, I-96, or I-94, you’ve likely seen your fair share of questionable driving.
Speed demons weaving through traffic, cars going 10 under in the left lane, and that one person who refuses to use a turn signal. I see it too! But here’s the kicker—despite all that chaos, Michigan drivers have been ranked the second best in the United States according to a new study from LendingTree. And honestly, it’s a title worth celebrating.
The study analyzed millions of insurance quotes to determine which states have the best and worst drivers, based on factors like at-fault accidents, DUIs, speeding tickets, and overall insurance claims. Michigan stood out for having relatively low rates of these risky behaviors, only trailing behind Massachusetts, which clinched the top spot.
So, what’s Michigan doing right? Part of the answer could be our state’s unique no-fault insurance system. While it’s a polarizing topic for many residents (my wallet included), it does emphasize accountability and safe driving habits. Plus, we deal with some of the toughest driving conditions around, from icy winter roads to construction season (a season all its own). Maybe that’s forced us to become better drivers over time…
