Prince County Council Member-at-Large Calvin S. Hawkins announces campaign for Prince George’s County Executive

132 years ago we were covering Post-Reconstruction when a former enslaved veteran started the AFRO with $200 from his land-owning wife. In 2022 we endorsed Maryland’s first Black Governor, Wes Moore. And now we celebrate the first Black female Senator from Maryland, Angela Alsobrooks!

Prince George’s County Council Member-at-large Calvin S. Hawkins II formally announced his candidacy for Prince George’s County Executive on Dec. 11 at the Homewood Suites located at 9103 Basil Court in Largo, Md.

Council Member Hawkins’ announcement marked a pivotal moment in the political landscape of Prince George’s County. The announcement comes after Senator- Elect Angela Alsobrook’s historic campaign to be the first Black person – man or woman– to represent the state in Congress.
