I agree wholeheartedly with Barb Forrest’s letter to the editor regarding nonlethal deterrent options for black bears.

I object only to her implication that they are somehow dangerous. They aren’t.

Black bears, different of course from grizzly bears in Alaska, Wyoming, and Montana, are rarely dangerous, with the exception of when a human comes between a mother and her cub. Usually, they will simply run away from a human. They will try to enter a house if they smell food, as they are opportunistic and can cause a mess…
